In the French government’s 27 July account, more than 2,500 firefighters—including 14 reinforcement columns from elsewhere in France and a Swiss group—were working the Saumos fire under SDIS 33 coordination. The European response added seven planes and four helicopters from seven countries. This page thanks every crew, forester, municipal team and volunteer whose steady work carried communities through the crisis.
The work at Cestas
The municipality recorded crews staying mobilised through the night to strengthen tactical zones and firebreaks. In its 29 July report, it described that patient work as essential to limiting renewed spread.
A team, made visible
In a field account, Captain Franck Laporte explained how emergency crews protected exposed sectors, while M. Boulan of Alliance Forêts Bois explained the firebreaks built to slow the flames. Their names illuminate a far larger collective effort.
In memory
We also remember Anthony Berthôme and Wilfried Schmitter, who died on 21 July while fighting a separate wildfire at Mérignac. They were not casualties of the Saumos fire; they belonged to the same Gironde firefighting community. We honour their service and hold their families, friends and colleagues in our thoughts.

In its 14 August statement, the Landes Prefecture reported about 1,100 hectares affected at Luglon, the whole municipality evacuated—about 525 people—and 500 firefighters and 51 gendarmes engaged. It said the fire remained virulent, especially at a 200-hectare spot fire, and that RD327 and RD14 were closed. No publication time was given, so those facts are dated to the statement rather than to this editorial check.
- Recovery work is under way. In its 6 August update, the Gironde Prefecture said it had brought together the 23 affected mayors and committed an initial €300,000 in state support.
- Residents may return to every Gironde commune that was evacuated, according to the Prefecture’s 3 August notice. That does not override local closures or make every route safe.
- Fire precautions remain strict. The 10 August Prefectural order keeps Gironde at the highest red forest-fire risk level; the DFCI live map displayed red for Gironde when checked at 16:40 CEST on 14 August, while Landes was orange; the feed metadata was last updated at 08:32 CEST that day.
Two dated updates remain useful context: Cestas’s 12 August notice concerns SNCF works at Gazinet, not a new fire-status change. Separately, the Landes Prefecture said on 31 July that the separate Biscarrosse fire was under control. Neither dated finding describes the active Luglon emergency or creates an incident-wide all-clear, so current authority instructions still take precedence.
Bordeaux today
Atmo’s Bordeaux page, updated 14 August 2026 at 16:01 CEST, rated city air poor because of ozone; its Bordeaux sub-indices still rated PM2.5 and PM10 good. Separately, Atmo’s official episode page showed one PM10 information-and-recommendation episode for Landes and Lot-et-Garonne when checked at 16:40 CEST. Atmo linked that regional particle degradation to the virulent Luglon fire, but did not attribute Bordeaux’s poor ozone index to the fire. The live Atmo city page and CAMS cards can therefore show a different current index without establishing renewed fire smoke. The airport, rail, tram and road cards below carry their own latest verified states and source times; no transport outcome is labelled fire-related without explicit authority wording.
Home, with conditions
On 3 August 2026, the Gironde Prefecture authorised return in the final two evacuated municipalities, Le Porge and Lège-Cap-Ferret. Lège began phased re-entry at 14:00 CEST on 3 August 2026, with access to the peninsula from 19:00 CEST. Return remains subject to local routes and closures.
The remaining limits
Return permission is not the same as unrestricted access. Lège-Cap-Ferret’s update, modified at 12:57 CEST on 4 August 2026, kept the Grand Crohot road and beach closed while other monitored beaches reopened from 5 August 2026. In Le Porge, the Prefecture scheduled residents of La Grigne campground and Domaine Résidentiel Naturiste La Jenny to return from 10:00 CEST on 5 August 2026 and holiday visitors from 8 August 2026. Burned ground remains unsafe.

Saumos began on 22 July. Investigators were pursuing a likely accidental human-origin lead linked to brush-clearing work; the final cause was not established. Biscarrosse began on 24 July on the road toward Sanguinet; the cited official bulletin did not confirm a cause.
Bordeaux Métropole reported wildfire smoke across the metropolitan area on 25 July. The Gironde Prefecture’s 7 August bulletin says no fine-particle alert linked to the fires has applied since 2 August 2026 and says local degradation can be caused by seasonal ozone; the 30 July PM10 episode is historical context, not the current status. ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine’s 25 July notice directly advises limiting outdoor exposure, keeping windows and doors closed, ventilating only when conditions allow and stopping mechanical ventilation during smoke.

The mass shelter has closed; individual help continues
Bordeaux’s Parc des Expositions shelter closed on the evening of 31 July 2026, but individual housing, psychological and cleanup support continues. When the Bordeaux Métropole relief page cannot be retrieved, the live source record preserves its last successful check and the original 1 August details instead of giving old information a new timestamp. The Prefecture’s 6 August reconstruction programme and local cleanup support are included separately below.
The mass reception centre closed on the evening of 31 July 2026. Its map marker is retained only as a closed historical facility. Bordeaux Métropole says every person leaving received individual help to return or move into temporary housing.
Help remains for people who still cannot go home
The metropolitan response has made 6,000 temporary beds available and reports 1,600 people housed. Social-housing providers are also offering 500 free places for stays of up to ten nights.

Bordeaux Métropole’s last verified notice, published 1 August 2026, paused public drop-offs and new metropolitan volunteer sign-ups while teams sorted existing donations. Return only when authorised
Luglon remains under a whole-municipality evacuation in the Landes Prefecture’s 14 August statement. Sabres opened reception at its salle des fêtes and Domaine de Landes verte, but the statement does not verify entrances, capacity or a safe route. Follow authorities on scene. In Gironde, dated return permissions remain separate: follow the route given by authorities, keep your phone on and be ready to leave again.
Respect red forest restrictions
The Prefectural order dated 10 August 2026 maintains Gironde at very-high/red forest-fire vigilance from publication. It restricts public presence and certain activities in exposed forest areas, while fire-affected sectors remain closed except to authorised people; local rules can be stricter. Separately, Cestas’ last incident update at 18:59 CEST on 4 August reported residual subsurface fires under surveillance.

Wear gloves and an FFP2 mask. Do not dry-sweep, vacuum, blow or pressure-wash ash.

NASA FIRMS near-real-time satellite hotspots
The map uses NASA FIRMS’ Area API through a private server-side proxy. It combines near-real-time VIIRS NOAA-20, NOAA-21 and S-NPP detections with MODIS, groups repeated observations into hotspot cells and refreshes every five minutes.
Why circles: FIRMS reports satellite thermal hotspots, not flame icons or verified incident shapes. Each circle marks a clustered hotspot location; its diameter increases with the cluster’s maximum fire radiative power. Circle size does not show the physical fire footprint, burned area or an official perimeter.Wind-derived—not a smoke feed
The purple map cone is calculated by this site from Open-Meteo 10 m wind direction and speed. It is a simple potential transport guide, not a plume model or fire-spread prediction.
The map’s air quality index circles and four-day Bordeaux forecast use CAMS Europe via the Open-Meteo Air Quality API. They prefer the modelled US air quality index; a clearly marked European air quality index fallback keeps the latest valid model visible if the fresh US-scale request is temporarily unavailable. At this audit, the NASA FIRMS live regional feed had refreshed at 16:37 CEST and returned 399 raw thermal detections aggregated into 49 cells; the latest acquisition in the regional query was 11:05 CEST. Regional detections may include several incidents and do not establish attribution, a perimeter, spread or control. Historical playback retained 52 non-cumulative frames through the 4 August 14:53 CEST acquisition. RainViewer returned 13 observed frames from 14:30 through 16:30 CEST and no nowcast frames. DFCI displayed red for Gironde and orange for Landes at 16:40 CEST, with feed metadata last updated at 08:32 CEST. Atmo’s Bordeaux data updated at 16:01 CEST rated city air poor because of ozone, while its official episode page showed a PM10 episode in Landes and Lot-et-Garonne. All layer and operations APIs expose their own source or checked time; the refresh-health endpoint reports component freshness. Models, regional detections and an absence of a nearby hotspot do not establish an all-clear, extinguishment, spread, route safety or personal health risk.
